Help Martin County protect our Lagoon by adhering to the Fertilizer Ordinance from June 1st to September 30th. Fertilizer restrictions aim to reduce the amount of harmful nutrients entering local water bodies, a crucial step toward improving and maintaining water and habitat quality.
Looking for some summer fun from home? Check out our Story Express and STEM Kits! Story Express kits are great for preschool, and STEM kits are great for K-5th grade.
Martin Digital History recently received from Sandra Thurlow three photographs of an old automobile that appears to have been converted into an early fire engine. The improvised truck features a ladder, tank, and hose. Unfortunately for the driver, there's no roof to the truck, so they have an umbrella, decorated with women divers, extended over the top.
A 26 May 1921 article in the Stuart News reported that Bert Babcock created the town’s fire truck from a “nearly new” Nash sedan with only the top and interior burned away. Fitted with a new truck body, it replaced Stuart’s earlier hand-drawn fire cart.
The photographs were taken at the triangular building once located where the rotary is now at Old Dixie Highway and Joan Jefferson Way. Built in 1919 for Babcock, Stuart’s first fire chief and first sheriff, it housed Babcock’s Garage and a car dealership before later becoming Lester’s Tire Service and Garage in 1931.
Take off into the world of flight with our state-of-the-art flight simulator at the Robert Morgade Library. Suitable for ages 13 and up, this simulator is designed to ignite curiosity and promote learning in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) through immersive aviation experiences!
Science: Understand the principles of flight and the physics behind how aircraft stay aloft.
Technology: Get hands-on experience with aircraft controls and avionics for navigation skills.
Engineering: Design and test your own airfoils and aircraft configurations to see how they perform.
Art: Use Photoshop to craft personalized aircraft designs and apply your artistic touch to the skies.
Math: Manage fuel costs and navigate an economic system to make informed decisions during your flights.
Additional benefits
The simulator offers an opportunity to experience the thrill of flying without the financial commitment of real-world lessons, providing a gateway for those who cannot obtain a pilot’s certificate to gain valuable skills. It is also a valuable tool for current pilots to hone their skills and practice flights before real-world journeys.
